Policies - Defence
“Suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able…” Luke 14:31
Strong defence of our country, and its vital interests, is necessary and should be a priority. This should include the maintenance of a well-resourced military and a nuclear deterrent.
The Christian Party supports the doctrine of a ‘just war’. However, we believe that foreign military adventurism should cease. Whilst we are “our brother’s keeper” Britain cannot pretend to be a worldwide policeman and its politicians must desist from parading on the world stage as if we are.
Specifically, the Christian Party believes that British troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan. We believe that an enabling role, by way of providing military training for the Afghan army, is the appropriate intervention that Britain’s armed forces should have in the region.
The scriptures ask the rhetorical question, “Who serves as a soldier at his own expense?” To the nation’s shame the answer to this question in recent times has been “British soldiers. ” The armed forces must be properly provided for, both in terms of equipment and facilities. We need to engender a contented and happy military. This can only be achieved by taking care of our armed forces and treating them with the honour and respect that they deserve.
Pay scales in the Armed Forces have fallen woefully behind those of their civilian counterparts. This is unacceptable and the Christian Party would seek to redress this situation as a matter of urgency.
Care and support for ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen needs radical improvement. The Christian Party will fight for such improvement, just as our ex-service personnel have fought so bravely for us.
Christian Party Members of Parliament will:
- Maintain a well resourced military with a nuclear deterrent.
- Support the doctrine of a ‘just war’, but not military adventurism.
- Withdraw British troops from Afghanistan.
- Support an enabling role for British military training personnel, by way of providing military training for the Afghan army.
- Treat our armed forces with the honour and respect that they deserve.
- Increase pay for the Armed Forces.
- Fight for radical improvement in care and support for ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen.
