Nick Clegg urged to leave the Coalition
11 April 2011
Warren Bradley, a prominent local council leader among the Lib Dems, has rattled the cage in which their local councillors feel imprisoned by their Parliamentary party.
In a confidential letter seen by the BBC, the Lib Dem former leader of Liverpool City Council has urged Nick Clegg to pull out of the coalition government. He urged his party leader to act before it “disappears into the annals of history”.
He writes: “Many other long-serving councillors could be defeated not because of their record, but because of your record and the perception of what we as Liberal Democrats now are.”
It seems that the leadership are closing their eyes to the obvious. A Lib Dem spokesman responded by saying the letter “simply does not reflect the views of the wider Liberal Democrat membership”.
He said: “Moving from a party of protest to a party of power has brought with it some very difficult decisions.”
It might have helped for the party of protest to be more realistic about its pledges. It is learning the cost of its grab for power over principle. Will the electorate trust them again? See what you can do about it here.
