Death of wife of Christian Party Leader

12 February 2011

The wife of the Leader of the Christian Party has passed away after a long illness aged 50 years.

Maxine Hargreaves will be remembered by many in the Long Island when she and her team of helpers visited Lewis to assist in the campaign for the Scottish Parliament Election in May 2007.  Their distinctive Afro-Caribbean singing brightened the streets of Stornoway with their lively campaigning style.

Maxine had a long battle with brain cancer which recurred just after the Rev. George Hargreaves visited Stornoway in September 2009 to plan the General Election campaign for the Western Isles.  At that time, 90% of those who responded to the Stornoway Gazette poll indicated that the Scottish Christian Party could win an MP in the Western Isles.  The Rev. Hargreaves withdrew from active campaigning when his wife’s illness recurred, and the SCP stepped aside from the contest in the Western Isles when Murdo Murray put himself forward as an Independent Christian candidate.

She passed away at home on 10/2/2011 surrounded by Christian family and friends singing the Lord’s praises.  Her obituary appears on the Christian Party website.
