Coastguard stations saved

14 July 2011

The coalition Government has abandoned its plan to downgrade the Stornoway and Shetland coastguard stations.

The SCP supported the retention of the Coastguard stations on a full time basis in Stornoway and Shetland.  We were amazed at the short-termism of the coalition Government supporting the original proposal to retain one 24-hour station in Aberdeen and a second base in either Shetland or Stornoway open only during daylight hours.

This welcome climb-down shows that where there is a will there is a way.  However the closure of the Forth and Clyde bases will go ahead.
